Northern Shoveler
Spatula clypeata
The Northern Shoveler is easy to recognize by its large, spoon-shaped bill. Males have a glossy green head, bright yellow eyes, a white chest, and rich chestnut sides. They often swim in circles while feeding, filtering small insects and seeds from the water. This species is common in wetlands, lakes, and shallow ponds.
